Abstract

This pictorial essay details anatomy of the normal parotid as well as a spectrum of intra- and extraparotid pathology. Extraparotid lesions which mimic aparotid swelling are well characterised on ultrasound.  In addition, sonographic features of intraparotid neoplasms, inflammation and infection are also illustrated. We recommend ultrasound as a useful first line approach in the evaluation of parotid disease, and also as an aid to guide biopsy of both intra- and extraparotid masses.
